Germination in early spring

I found some of my spinaches and pak-chois, which were seeded about 2 weeks ago, have germinated at last! They are so tiny that I had to get closer to the surface of planting beds to find them but it's expected more sprouts of them are going to come up out of the soil.
Young sprouts might give us hope for good harvests but especially germination in early spring can give not only excitement but uplift feeling.

Love the fact that you use the sunflower seed shells as the mulch. Any info on the nutrient benefit?

I think thats not sunflower seed shells, maybe rice husks.I use the burnt rice husks for my mulch. Your germinating seeds indicates the good old spring is coming soon Takaeko.

Actually they are not sunflower seed shells but rice husks as p3chandan said. Using rice husks as mulch is common in Japan and they can keep soil moist for longer and turn into good fertilizer when composted on soil bed.

Thank you for helping Hafiz! I wish it could get warmer soon as in your country!

That is wonderful sightings when you still have cold weather there. Takaeko, I have been meaning to ask, at your part of Japan do you have frost or snow during FUYU? Well, where I used to live in Japan, in FUYU snow are always there.

In Osaka where I live we have no snow accumulation only with brief snow but I have to concern seriously frost till the end of this winter since it has been much colder than average. Fortunately I have not found frost injury on my vegetables. Anyway, where did you live in Japan? It must be northern area judging from the fact that you alway saw snow there.

Those little seedlings are going to need some protection, Takaeko. I hope you have one of your plastic cloches ready!

Yes! those important sprouts should be protected for good harvest! Actually, they are planted inside my vinyl tunnels which can protect them against frost and cold wind.
