This week's harvest

I'm very happy to see the bumper harvest of summer vegetables but I and my wife are wondering how we can consume them?
Anyway, I sliced a cucumber harvested just now and enjoyed the sliced cucumbers with mayonnaise.

Installing new methods

It's difficult for novice gardeners like me to pursuing 100% organic gardening but I believe pursuing 80%~90% organic gardening can be feasible with installing new methods to decrease usage of chemical things like pesticide.

I install 2 new methods, companion planting and yellow buckets.

I planted romaine lettuces beside Chinese cabbages for warding off young worms which like to eat Chinese cabbages. Romaine lettuces can fume odor which young worms hate so they can't get close to planting ridges where the lettuces are planted.

My 2nd method is placing yellow buckets beside my vegetables.

It took 1 week since I had installed them and I found them very effective to repel aphids!
As I mentioned on my previous blog, aphids can be allured by yellow color. And I found hundreds of aphids were drown in water in the yellow buckets and no aphids on my vegetables!

Both of the methods are reasonable and cheep to install so I would like you to try them.

Harvesting "Chisha"/ leaf lettuces.

-- from iPod touch

Today I harvested "Chisha lettuces" or leaf lettuces which were planted 2 month ago. That kind of lettuce doesn't form a head. I found their leaves are about 30cm/11inch so I believe it's the time to harvest them.

When I harvest them, I have to be careful because the leaves don't roll inside like cabbages or usual lettuces and they are so fragile that they break and snap easily.

I and my wife prepared the lettuces with removing dirt, soil, bugs and their roots and,,,,

Today's dinner was BBQ on a electric heating plate! You can see the lettuces and other vegetables, which were grown in my garden,  beside the plate.

We rolled a grilled beef and gochujang (Korean red chili paste) with a leaf of the lettuce.
You can eat more vegetables with grilled beefs and expect well-balanced nutrition in that way.
