Colorful okras and hot chilies

A yellow flower of "a purple okra ".

A fruit of a purple okra.
You can see red-violet trunks and twigs.

Purple okras and a green okra.
The taste is almost same.....

My hot chilies are mature enough to be harvested.
I'll make a red chili oil later.

My kids planted 4 cabbages.

My kids seem to love planting vegetables as well as harvesting them.
After we cultivated some soil beds today, they asked me to let them plant 4 cabbage sprouts.
They knew I bought the sprouts and would plant them today and they were looking forward to doing it.

When they started planting them, they dealt with the sprouts so carefully not to hurt the sprout's roots. I believe they know their way to plant them can affect the growth of the vegetables.

I'm very happy that they know what we should do next after planting them. My son, Kazuya, said " Dad, we'll have to make "straw beds" for them, right?". Yes, you are right! I left making straw beds to him and he made it successfully. He also know the beds can keep water inside and make the soil wet even in a hot summer.

Setting a insect screen is still difficult for my kids so I did it. I believe today's their efforts can contribute to great harvest in the near future.

Soil improvement and rest

Today I and my kids added fertilizer and soil blended with some nutrition to planting beds for trees of cucumbers and tomatoes after I pulled out them.

My kids helped me to cultivate the soil bed and to mix the soil and fertilizer and new soil. Although the heatwave this summer have been alleviated, cultivating in a hot day was not easy for the kids but they were so cooperative and we could shared the workload.

I'll let the soil beds rest for a week and I'll plant some pak-choy, or Chinese cabbages.

Visiting Toshodaiji-temple, one of the World Heritage Sites in Nara

Today My family visited my father in law living in Nara where many famous tourism spots are located. Toshodaiji-Temple, which is not only one of them but is designated as the World Heritage Site by UNESCO, is located very near his house. The temple is most attractive spot for me since its serene, austere atmosphere created by its old and beautiful wooden temples and gardens. Today I visited there for searching for healing of my mind.

We can see many old wooden structures in the precinct of the temple and most famous one among them is the Golden hall or Main hall, which was constructed in AD 759. It's not colorful, not golden-plated on its pillars and beams like other Buddhist temples but its beauty of austerity attracts many tourists and Buddhist prayers.

The Golden hall (mail hall) of Toshodaiji-temple.

Precinct of the temple

In the hall, we can see the Rushana Buddha statue/盧舎那仏. Most of statues of Buddha open their eyelids incompletely. According to the Buddhism doctrine, their incomplete eyelid opening represents achieving enlightenment and Buddha can see everything in the real world with his opened eyes and everything in his mind with his closed eyes.

In the precinct of the temple, there are some gardens where we can enjoy many kinds of flowers, trees and their landscapes. Now in the mid of August, we can enjoy seeing lotus flowers. Lotus is very important plants in Buddhism because blooming lotus flowers told people the birth of Buddha according to the Buddhism doctrine.

Is it a shower head??
No, it's a receptacle of a lotus.

Some buds of lotus were found in lotus pond.
They are blooming in a few days.....

I'm very happy to see some flowers were blooming!

A green moss is incorporated so often in design of traditional gardens in Japan.  In the precinct of the temple we can enjoy a garden covered with green moss. I love a landscape of rocks and woods covered with beautiful green moss, which can create beauty of serenity and austerity.

Harvesting with my daughter in a hot summer day.

Now my kids are enjoying 1-month summer vacation. Should parents consider how their kids spend their vacation? Oh, yes they, including me and my wife, should for their education. We should not let them spend a whole vacation watching anime-tv marathons and playing video games.

I bought a Nintendo video game for them last Christmas but they seem to be less interested in it than other friends of them, fortunately. What my daughter is interested in is helping me in gardening, especially in harvesting while my son is into playing baseball belonging to a baseball club of his primary school.

Today my daughter asked me to take to my garden and to let her harvesting summer vegetables.

" I've got today's dinner! "

I found some deformed egg-plants while most of them
are healthy. I should water more for them.

My daughter is nipping a cucumber.

Are you trying to hog the cucumber?

My green chili trees, planted in the end of June, are having many mature fruits. Grilled the chili with sliced beef is a favorite of my family.

My purple okras are also growing healthily with many buds. Purple okra is originated in Okinawa where I've found the locals used the okras in various dishes. You can see their purple stems, which is different from normal green okras.

Watering is my daughter's favorite job. I know she enjoy seeing rainbow in a shower,,,,,.

Today's harvest
4 egg-plants
1 tomato
10 green peppers
10 green chilies
10 black chilis

Presents in summer

Today my wife's aunt, our gardening teacher, gave us big presents of 2 water melons, pumpkins. We we were surprised not only with their beautiful appearance but with their taste! You can see a water melon cut into a quarter and you can see imagine how big it was before been cut.

The pumpkin were middle-sized compared with ones shown in a Halloween.
I believe it is also sweet and delicious. We've not decide how we cook it but it will be boiled in broth with sliced beef.

The taste of the melon were so sweet and juicy that my kids ate them out saying " I've never eaten such sweet one! ". I believe they are right.

When we see roll models in any fields, we can be inspired for improving our behaviors, attitudes. The presents from my wife's aunt gave us hints on what kinds of vegetables we can grow next.
